MEET VALERIA

I observe things for a living.

That sounds simple, but it is the center of almost everything I do. I watch dogs and people closely. I watch people closely. I observe the room, the routine, the handling, the history, the pressure, the timing, the recovery, and the small details most people miss.

A dog's behavior is never just the moment everyone finally notices. It is usually the visible edge of a much larger pattern.

My job is to help families see that pattern clearly.

I've spent 30+ years in the dog world: conformation, grooming, veterinary, sports, shelter work, 4-H instruction, obedience, behavior consulting, training, tracking, service dog training, and protection. I've also studied anything I could get my hands on, from learning and welfare to behavior, nutrition, and the ways dogs adapt to us.

That background gives me a wide lens. I’m not focused on one trick, one cue, one label, or one neat explanation. I’m looking at how the whole system is functioning.

Families who come to me are tired, confused, embarrassed, or frustrated. They've often tried simple advice that didn't fit their dog or their lives. My job is to slow things down, clarify what's happening, and show what needs to change first.

I care about practical answers and accuracy. A plan should make life easier for people and better for the dog. If it only suppresses behavior and leaves the dog overwhelmed, it's not enough.

This is why my job is not built around obedience drills or long-term dependency. It is built around understanding. When you understand what your dog's behavior is communicating, you can make better decisions, change the right things, and stop wasting time on solutions that never fit the problem.

The same desire of observation shows up in the rest of my life, too and extends beyond my job and into my everyday life.

I live on a small homestead in Northern Michigan with my husband, our dogs Roo and Dobby, and a flock of chickens and guineas. Family is central to my life. My days often include ordinary, grounding things like collecting eggs, growing food, cooking from scratch, foraging, reading, drawing, walking in the woods, watching birds, and watching the amazing world around me.

Observing is something I truly enjoy, whether I'm sitting and watching our chickens, the deer in the field, insects, the weather, or the animals that cross my path. I like seeing how living things move through their world without human interference.

That is the most honest link between my personal life and professional work. I am interested in behavior as it really happens, not as a slogan, a formula, or a checklist of commands. I care about context, rhythm, safety, pressure, choice, and the quiet details that reveal the truth before the obvious behavior ever appears.

I am based in Johannesburg, Michigan, just outside Gaylord. I offer virtual dog behavior consultations to clients anywhere. For in-person small group classes, I serve Northern Michigan, including Johannesburg, Gaylord, and nearby communities such as Lewiston, Vanderbilt, and Elmira.

★★★★★ GOOGLE REVIEW

"My lab Idgie, and I are profoundly grateful to have been afforded the opportunity to work with such a professional as Valeria. I have specific cognitive and physical challenges, but she has been nothing short of awesome. She’s knowledgeable, highly educated, and patient with us, individually and collectively. We value her instruction and input and have, in a short time, learned a great deal from her via guidance, instruction, and demeanor. She has always been punctual, kind, and very good at verbal and written communication. She has indeed provided us with successful and positive outcomes. We have been blessed to have her in our lives. We have recommended Valeria to our friends and family, who have consistently validated our progress. Thank you!”
