I GET IT!
I wasn't born an expert...

You see, I used to feel EXACTLY the same as you.

Maybe you find that hard to believe.

After all, these days I’m a successful Canine Behavior Coach.

But, even though I’m considered an expert…

You know what?

I wasn’t born an expert...

When I was a young adult I got my first dog.

I was so excited and had big plans for my new Rottweiler puppy. I wanted to show him in conformation and obedience, so took him to as many obedience classes as I could in his first year.

Our first couple of conformation shows he did great and won many ribbons.

When he was around 15 months old I decided I wanted to try my hand at obedience competitions. I went to a local show with my adolescent, intact, Rottweiler where he proceeded to lung and bark at a beautiful, sweet, Golden Retriever!

The people around me, all started to scold and ridicule me, telling me to leave with my viscous dog. I knew my dog wasn’t vicious. Most of the time he was a big baby and super sweet. But he was HUGE and he was feeling his oats! I didn’t recognize the situations I shouldn’t have put him in and I didn't know what to do about his unacceptable behavior.

I cried the whole way home!

That hour and a half drive felt like it took a lifetime. Because of how embarrassed I was, I never took him to another show! I understand the helplessness of not knowing what to do when your dog misbehaves.

I never wanted to feel like that again and that started my journey for answers to my dog’s behavior.

After 30 years of learning, experiencing and teaching people and their dogs, I have answers!

Lots of them!

I’ve had many dogs come into my life since then, all with their own unique personalities and situations that tested my abilities. I’ve learned from each and every one of them. I now know, that no matter what, that whatever dog I bring into my home, I can help them become their best self AND I can help you!

I know you want to fix the problem you're having with your dog NOW!

I know you want to feel relaxed, proud and confident with your dog.

I know you have watched TV programs that seem to show serious problems fixed like magic, within an hour.

But the reality is that what we don’t see is the editing involved, how long the training took and what actually happened behind the scenes AND whether or not that fix was permanent or just good TV.

Permanent behavior change takes time, understanding and consistency from you and FOR your dog.

I have designed my behavior modification programs with just that in mind…

Unbelievably successful dog training programs that walk you through, step-by-step, how a professional trainer (that’s me) lives and teaches their very own family dogs.

And get results like these!

ABBIE & STELLA

I chose drop the leash dog training because of Valeria's understanding with dogs and her students. Valeria taught me many things about my animals and everytime I had questions for her she was quick to respond. I will recommend her dog training to everyone I know.

I once read in a book that said that dogs know how to sit, come, and stay, the only thing we need to teach them is the words for those behaviors so they will do the actions when asked. Valeria is so great on showing you how to train your dog in a way for you to understand them and for them to understand you.

SHELBY, TIMBER & SKIDDER

We LOVE Valeria!! There is not enough space to express how valuable her training is. She gave us the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to train our dogs to be well-behaved gentlemen. She not only taught us methods and cues, but she helped us understand dog behavior and why they do the things they do.

MONTHS after leaving how to “settle” on a mat and then not using the command again, I told Skidder, our black lab, to settle. He immediately went to his mat like he had learned months previously.

Timber, our golden retriever, learned how to walk with a loose leash without pulling. But then he was never on a leash after that since he runs freely in our yard and in the woods. After his brother was injured and couldn’t run in the yard for a couple of months, Timber and I started going on walks down the road with the leash (so as not to make his brother jealous being confined to the house). He remembered exactly what he was supposed to do.

To this, we owe a debt of gratitude to Valeria for her knowledge and training. We are SO thankful we found Drop the Leash and Valeria. In fact, I’m pretty sure our boys like Valeria a little more than they do us...and that’s okay.

MARY & IDGIE

My lab Idgie, and I are profoundly grateful to have been afforded the opportunity to work with such a professional as Valeria. I have specific challenges that I live with both cognitively and physically, and yet she has been nothing short of awesome. She’s knowledgeable, highly educated, and patient with both of us, individually as well as collectively. We value her instruction and input, and have in a short time learned a great deal from her via guidance, instruction and demeanor. She has always been punctual, and kind, and is very good at communication both verbal and written. She has indeed provided us with successful and positive outcomes. We have been blessed to have her in our lives. We have recommended Valeria to our friends and family and they consistently verbalize and validate our progress. Thank you!

The digital classroom is the safest environment for dogs who need extra time and space

My behavior modification programs are effective, online, digital, personalized, virtual programs that will empower you to transform your life through simple, cutting-edge, dog training and behavior strategies.

The digital classroom is the safest environment for dogs who need extra time and space providing you to lay a solid foundation focused on the fundamentals that you and your dog will need to progress successfully.

Together, without outside stressors that slow or inhibit behavior change, we will build on your dog’s progress at both of your own paces by creating positive training experiences.

Once you and your dog understand the foundations, and you are both feeling confident, you can then start helping your dog change their emotional response and behaviors to the things that make them act out or misbehave.

Virtual dog training is a positive training tool and it is used by my students with great success.

If I had a dog for every time I've heard...

“Wow, will you move in with me to train my dog?”

OR

“I wish my dog would behave like yours!"

Discover what my students already know.

That you don’t need me to live with you to have a well-behaved family dog!

Here’s a little secret…. It’s not all about teaching your dog obedience and I’ll share my secrets with you in one of the most comprehensive family dog training programs available.

You’ll learn how to apply these skills to your everyday life, where it matters.

My behavior modification programs will take you step-by-step through each leg of the journey to behavior change and I will be there, guiding you along the way.

Even if you feel like your life today is so far from your target that you can’t even see it, as long as you follow the program, you’re guaranteed to see positive changes to your dog’s behavior!

You've been lied to! You've been told that some people are just naturals at training dogs. That growing up and living with dogs will teach you everything you need to know about dog behavior. If you provide enough love that your dog will be a well-behaved dog and that it's all in how you raise them.

I'm here to tell you that I've had teeth all of my life, that doesn't make me a dentist!

You CAN learn to train your dog, but it takes being provided the right information by someone that has the education and skills based on the science of animal behavior and learning to teach you.

AND I know you love your dog, that's why you're here! But genetics really do affect temperament and even though proper training and behavior modification can help most dogs, what your dog was bred for and the temperament of their parents DOES matter.

Let me be your Family Dog Mediator!

My all-inclusive programs show you how to train your dog through friendly, positive, results oriented methods all in the safe environment of your home!

Though I do not use or advocate choke chains, pinch collars, shock (e-collar, stim, etc.) collars, throw cans, water spray, dominance rolls, or throw chains, I will not judge or shame you if you have used those methods and are looking for a new way to teach your dog. Instead, I educate dog owners about the most positive, least intrusive training available. Supporting effective, reliable, behavior change for the family dog without the use of physical intimidation, fear, pain or discomfort.

Providing the same teaching quality and education for the human end of the leash as I do for their four-legged companion, I give you, the human guardian, the skills and knowledge needed to be a confident guide for your family dog.

To provide all of the above, I continue to pursue education in regards to the most up to date information available on behavior analysis, animal behavior, teaching and learning. See my credentials here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my dog too young OR too old to learn?

Emphatically NO! It's never too late to start training your dog! Ideally teaching your dog starts the day that you bring your new family member home, whether that be a puppy or an older re-homed or rescue dog. It's easiest to show your dog great behaviors and skills right from the start. The less your dog rehearses unwanted behavior such as leash pulling, jumping up on people or running away, the less time you have to spend teaching new behaviors. Old dogs can learn new tricks!

Can I teach my own dog? I'm not a dog trainer!

YES you can! I know this from personal experience, and from teaching thousands of students over 30 years, how to teach their own dogs.

Dog training is not like eye color. The idea that you are either born with it or you’re not is a destructive myth. Dog training is a skill. No different than playing the guitar or riding a bike, dog training can be learned when taught by the right teacher.

How long will it take to teach my dog?

Learning is different for everyone and the same goes for your dog. You will be learning a new skill and in addition be teaching your dog, who is also a new learner. Most of my students experience positive results within days of beginning the K9 HomeSchool Program, but as several of my students have said, "Trust the process!"

My behavior modification programs were NOT created for everybody. This is not an instant fix, magic pill type of program. It is not for the lazy.

The two things you really need are strong desire to improve and the ability to push your comfort zone.

If you truly want it, you’ll put the time in. You’ll watch 30 minutes or so a day, you’ll do the daily exercises, and you’ll watch magic happen in with your dog.

So the two easiest ways to know if this is right for you:

  • Are you willing to spend time each week watching these videos, participating in the Zoom Group Classes, and our amazing community?

  • Are you married to doing the same things you’ve always done, or are you willing to try new things in order to grow and achieve your goals?
